Kansas Katahdins:  Sheep Page
We chose Katahdins to help train stockdogs -- we raise Katahdins because we like them and want a
productive meat sheep that didn't take lots of effort.  For example:
The hair or shedding wool coat eliminates shearing, a big plus in a world of poor wool prices and
expensive, hard to find shearers.
Katahdins are good foragers -- grazing 7-9 months reduces hay storage, volume & expense.
Easy lambing and great mothering means we don't lose a lot of sleep during lambing.
We experimented with St. Croix, Barbado and Dorper crosses, but pure bred Katahdins had the right
coat and nature.  They're not particularly high strung so they work well with dogs, have good growth
characteristics and have excellent carcass qualities.  We are focusing our efforts on developing our
registered and commercial Katahdins.

We have been in the Volunteer Scrapie Certification program since Feb. 2002.  Since genotyping for
scrapie resistance has gained interest and acceptance, we test all of our rams and replacement ram lamb
candidates.  This year we tested a total of 35 animals including 30 of our ewes.

Our performance records are based on our own breeding/lambing records and lamb weights.  As we
develop a significant registered flock, we hope to participate in the National Sheep Improvement Program
as a valuable aid in selecting superior breeding stock.

Our goal is to breed Katahdins that twin unassisted and raise their lambs with minimal supplemental feed
beyond grazing and hay.  We are targeting our deworming program to recognize and take advantage of
natural resistance to internal parasites.  Adelong Farm's mission is to produce fast growing lambs from
good frame-sized ewes and rams that shed cleanly, produce well for many years and are good natured,
disease resistant, easy-care  sheep.  Take a few minutes and look at what we have to offer.
