Rosalie's New Dog, Introducing Gem
August 11th Rick Pinney put a puppy on the plane bound for N.E. Kansas.  The connecting flight was the last for
the day and over an hour late.  We were concerned that Delta's cargo office would shut down and we would have
our new addition stuck in K.C. overnight -- 50 miles from home!  I explained the dilemma to the clerk for the third or
fourth time.  While polite, he was frustrated, with both the late flight and the farmers waiting for their 'high dollar'
dog to arrive!

The clerk finally said, "You really don't have to worry, the plane is here and..." -- stepping back to open the door to
the cargo area -- "there's no way in Hell we're going to listen to that all night!"

Wails, cries and puppy expletives from what sounded like 20 irritated pups rang throughout the hanger!  Our dog
had arrived!
Gem has been with us for two weeks now and is living up to her promise.  She has more energy than the law
allows, takes full advantage of her "puppy license" with the other dogs and is already trying to flank sheep.
Yesterday she went out to help fetch the herd (45 ewes, 62 lambs).  The adult dogs patiently downed while I
moved the ATV through a gate and shut it behind me -- not so with Gem!  She drove 107 sheep out about 40
yards, flanked around the herd in a clockwise direction (come bye for you herders) and started a fetch!

What a dog she's going to be!

The guardian dogs were a little suspicious of her at first -- Hayli, the older female, sort of regarded her as a nuisance
but Kagan, the young male, saw her as a small predator and had no place on his farm for such a creature.  Now it's
a hoot to watch a 125 # monster play bowing to a 14 # prima donna!

It's getting close to Christmas now and Gem is about 6 months old.  Click

training Gem and an update on her antics.
